Once I had a hair stylist try to thin it out but my hair looked shorter and more layered...that's not what I'm looking for. I just want it to be lighter, not so heavy and keep the same length.

I have the same problem. Go to a stylist that knows what they are doing. When you tell her that you want it thinned, don't be afraid to ask her what she thinks that means. It is your hair and before a single cut is made, especially when you want to keep the length, you and your stylist should be on the same page. Tell your stylist what you want to accomplish and ask her to tell you what she is able to do.

Ask your sylist to thin it out. I have to have it done to mine because it is thick and long, too!

Ask hairdresser to thin it out but also ask them not to loose the length. Thats what my haridresser does to mine

you need a new a new barber,ask for them to thin it out with out cutting the length.

get it layered . this is where they shorten the top parts and the "layers" get longer going down ...

My stylist uses thinning scissors on my hair. They can really thin the bulkiness. Works great for me!

do not under any circumstances allow a stylist to go anywhere near you head with thinning shears. They are meant for short hair. If you use them on long thick hair, all you get is long, thick, frizzy hair. Putting layers in will help lighten the load a bit, but if you don'y want layers, then you will have to live with thick heavy hair.
