Flat Iron for thick, coarse, wavy hair.?

My daughter really wants a flat iron for x-mas. We are concerned about her damaging her hair. I have been online looking and of course the expensive ones get the best reviews but can't beleive that some of the ones you buy locally, i.e. target, etc. can't work ok without damaging her hair. We really do not want to spend very much money, as who knows how long she will stick with this idea of straightening her hair. Kids change their minds constantly. Help! So many types out there, you don't know who to believe after a while.

i have thick curly hair, and i almost never straighten my hair. it takes over an hour. ask your daughter if she is really commited to doing it every morning. if she still is, know that most straighteners do damage hair and it is not good for every day, long term use.

GHD are the best I have very thick hair, wavy hair and straighten my hair most days I use alot of deep conditioning treatments to help with dryness as they get older kids care more and more about their appearance so to me its a good investment.

I would probably bring her in to a hair stylist, let her take a look at your daughters hair %26amp; maybe she can recommend something inexpensive you should use.

The chi or any tourmaline straightener will work well on coarse curly hair and I have never heard of anyone complaining of damage to their hair. You can get one cheap, if you go to Ulta with a 20% off coupon that you can get from their website. Stay away from Rusk, that straightener, it caught my hair in the plates and snapped it off. The key is that you have to use a prepping spray (I use one by Matrix) before straightening that will protect your hair from the heat. I straighten my hair about 80% of the time and it takes about 15 minutes to get my coarse and wavy hair pin straight. I also use straigtening products on my wet hair as well.
