My friends and I just put it in a pony tail, then wrap the hair around the pony and tie again, and the use a mirror to look at the bun thing and pull out pieces as needed. You can use bobby pins to put pieces back that fall out and to make it look cooler, as well as pulling pieces out and tucking them loosly back into the elastic at another place. It takes a couple of tries to get it right. You can do it! Good luck!
